Nerds aren't in the majority, but they are a powerful force. From Bill Gates to Mark Zuckerberg, the world would not be where it is today without nerds. Yet they are still under attack. The reason why they are hated is a complicated one, but it boils down to a few things.
They are socially awkward
Despite their intelligence, many nerds don't have good social skills. This is because their brains are wired to focus on facts and data rather than people. This leads to a tendency to avoid people and stay in their own worlds. It is emotionally painful to feel rejected by others, so nerds create their own bubble of self-reference.
They are overly focused on their intellectual pursuits
A big problem for nerds is that they can become so obsessed with their favorite hobby or subject that they forget about other aspects of life. This is a dangerous trap because, as we all know, the real world is a lot more complex than math problems and Star Wars fan fiction.
They are a source of mockery
Kids who are unpopular often seek to make themselves look better by maltreating those they think rank below them on the social hierarchy. This is especially true when the person being persecuted is female or black. Nerds are a natural target because they often lack popularity and have trouble connecting with girls and other people of color. They also like debating and discussing topics that are not popular with the average kid. This gives them a sense of power that makes them seem scary to some.
